Saskatoon Economy


  • Saskatoon's economic growth is expected to continue to show steady growth.  Projected sustainable growth of around 2% for 2016, according to a new report by SREDA.

  • Building permits increased substantially in 2015, up by 122.9 per cent from 2014 mostly due to institutional construction of the $285 million Saskatchewan Children Hospital.  Urban housing and industrial stats showed a slight drop over 2015.  Major city projects include, two new bridges (first to commence construction in 2016) and completion of the Remai Modern Art Gallery.
  • 2016 start of construction of the mixed-use project "River Landing" in the downtown core.  River Landing will include hotel, office, residential and retail facilities.  The first phase is a 15 story, 155 room hotel and spa complex, Alt Hotel by Group Germain Hotels.


  • Economic forecasters are predicting that Saskatchewan energy sector will see a moderate rebound in 2016.  Agriculture is forecasted for significant growth of 8% to help Saskatchewan's economy.
  • In 2015 Saskatchewan's population hit another record high and we were one of the fastest growing provinces in Canada.
  • Saskatchewan's population reached 1,138,879 in October 2015.  More than 100,000 people have moved to the province since the start of 2010 - the fastest and most sustained period of population growth in decades.
